This appears to be an old document of some sort. Although it has no actual music on it, it presents an artistic answer as to why such music should be created. This article states that such music allows for us to exist and affect each other in a multidimensional web. Such a web, through music, can be played with and changed. Thus, the very fabric of our beings can be changed and evolved. Understanding DNA through music allows us to experience everything within this evolving web. I very much like this approach to molecular music, there is a clear yet subjective approach to it, rather than a strictly objective approach.

This site features the leading proponents of molecular music. These specialists argue that the tertiary structures of genes that are of extreme important are emphasized in molecular music. Since music is understood better than complex DNA, the music form gives clues to the structure of the DNA itself. Such insight can then allow scientists to ‘hear’ an important gene in some other organism. My comments: I am almost getting the picture that the idea of music is being destroyed. If anything, music’s objective is in its subjectivity! Music would not be music if it could be defined as finite loops and whirls along a DNA strange – that’s math not music. Also, expecting scientists to identify a strand of atonal music in other organisms since the music acts like “melodies” is nearly impossible for professional musicians, let alone scientists.

The is a second link within a previous site and is actually a map of the alpha chain put into various colors to identify what the actual segments of the gene are! Such information could come to help encompass the form in which my music takes. I was thinking of allowing the bases to be the primary nodes, and then these colors could be put into various chords that will change as indicated by the picture throughout a certain amount of time.

This is a personal site about how an artist took the 3D structure of Bovine gamma crystallin protein and put it into a CD. The artist used complex algorithmic art and programs to create better music. The artist was one of the first to use not only primary, but secondary and tertiary structures to create better and more interesting art. Much like other samples I have seen, the artist uses light absorption spectra of the base pairs to create the pitch. It seems interesting that most artists decided to use light spectra to create light. It seems rather arbitrary. But at the same time, the open-ended nature of the art therefore allows me to randomly assign pitch without much deviation from current methods of deriving pitch.

This artist is taking an in depth look into the relationship between music and DNA, and DNA and music. For example, Peter examined one of Chopin’s pieces. Since Chopin had Cystic Fibrosis, Peter used the genes from Cystic Fibrosis, related them to certain pitches, then discovered that pattern of pitches within Chopin’s works themselves to create more intense music which not only encompasses Chopin’s music, but even Chopin himself. This amazing duality of creating music that is not only musically sound but scientifically accurate to the composer is an ideal that is very appealing. This idea of the extent to which the artist controls the art itself is something I would like to explore in the midterm project. Now I only have to find out how, ha!
